Chandigarh, February 27 The functioning of the Enforcement Wing of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today came under scanner when some councillors levelled corruption charges against the officials of the wing. After receiving the complaints, Municipal Commissioner R K Rao has announced the transfer of all the officials who have been serving the wing for more than a year now.

Noisy scenes were witnessed in the house when Congress councillor Anu Chatrath raised the issue of alleged highhandedness of the enforcement wing officials during anti-encroachment drives in the city. She alleged that only recently the enforcement wing employees challaned 150 traders of Sector 15 and failed to provide proper receipts of the goods seized from their shops.

Another Congress councillor Davinder Singh Babla while supporting Chatrath on the issue said he too received complaints from the traders of Sector 28 against an inspector of the wing.

"Enforcement people are openly collecting bribes from traders," he alleged.

Babla said majority of the employee are working in the enforcement wing of MC for the past many years. "As a result, they have formed a strong nexus with traders which has further leads to corruption," he said. He claimed that traders are ready to submit affidavits against such officials who are involved in the corrupt practices.

Meanwhile, Rao said councillors and traders should help in laying trap against the employees who are involved in the corruption. He assured the house that he will take strict action against such employees.

He said there is a need to evolve a system to streamline the enforcement wing. Mayor Pardeep Chhabra suggested holding a weeklong awareness drive about the enforcement drive with traders.
