Strange as this may sound but it is true. The institute that owes much of its glory to Dr M S Randhawa forgot to spare even a minute in the memory of the father of Green Revolution whose birth anniversary falls today. Ironically, the university that has lined up a host of functions to commemorate the birth centenary of Dr Randhawa failed to spare a moment to remember the legendary figure.
An ICS officer, Dr Randhawa headed the university in the 70s. Apart from his administrative skills, he made a major contribution in compiling the Sikh and Kangra paintings, helped in the creation of Chandigarh, The Rock Garden, Lalit Kala Akademi at Chandigarh to name a few.
PAU additional director communication Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman said, “We had dedicated 2008 to Dr Randhawa. This year too we have various function lined up in his memory. We plan to organise a flower show. We will also dedicate our art gallery to Dr Randhawa apart from releasing a book on him.” When asked as to why the university did not spare even two minutes to remember this great man who helped PAU attain international fame, Dr Dhiman said, “We will be holding public functions at the end of this month. At present, we are busy with the preparations for various functions.”
Dr Amarjeet Singh, former head, Department of Journalism Languages and Culture, who had worked with Dr Randhawa closely , added: “I prayed for Dr Randhawa and so did the others, but it was a private affair.” A senior official of the university said:
“The university sends out condolence messages and congratulatory greetings to all and sundry. But when it came to remember Dr Randhawa, it forgot to do so.”
