Amritsar gets national award for NREGA admn

Amritsar The Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, K S Pannu has been selected by the Government of India for the Award for Excellence in National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (NREGA) administration. He would be conferred this award on February 2 at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute in New Delhi.

Sources said Amritsar is the only district in Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir which has been selected. The central government had constituted an expert committee to examine the nominations for the award with the help of National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad, and after due consideration, the Ministry has decided to present the award toAmritsar district.

The NREGA scheme was started in Amritsar district in 2007-08. During the last year, a total of Rs 1,466.93 lakh was received for development, of which Rs 1,086.84 lakh was utilised. The district had issued 24,322 job cards to the villagers and generated work of 7.35 lakh person days.

The village ponds were desilted and retaining walls with screening chambers were built around the village ponds. This not only helped to maintain sanitation in the village but also in the removal of encroachments from the village water bodies. Meanwhile, Pannu said a total of Rs 1,011.13 lakh was received during the current year out of which Rs 723.73 lakh has already been utilised.
