This gallery, located near Lion Gate, Colaba, was one of the important galleries in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Progressives even held their first group show here, which first opened in 1950. Its record includes playing host to a solo exhibition of MF Husain’s works.
Over the years, the frequency and quality of exhibitions held here have declined, with the occasional avant garde artist sandwiched between an array of mediocrity.
There are several reasons for its climb-down from the top-gallery list in the last decade. It faces stiff competition from upcoming, hi-tech galleries in the plush neighbourhood. Galleries in Kala Ghoda, like Jehangir, Chemould, Pandole and Bodhi, are more sought after now, while the Artist’s Centre suffers from lack of patronage. One, however, hopes that this art hub regains it past glory.
