Chandigarh Some people are blessed. Dr Pradeep Bhardwaj always knew that even if he continued with another profession, his love for music would be with him throughout his life.

A MBBS from Dayanand Medical College in Ludhiana, his passion for music developed during in school. He was in Class VIII when he undertook formal training from his tenant, who was a professor in Music. In his first stage performance, Dr Bhardwaj not only won the singing contest but also a scholarship of Rs 11,000! He later did his BA in Music, with distinction, but as his father wanted him to be a doctor, he enrolled at DMC.

In his college days, he also won the title of ‘Mr Festival’ two times in a row. Says Dr Bhardwaj: “It was a medi-fest organised in college where would-be doctors had to showcase their talent, whether singing, dancing, mono-acting or playing instruments.” In his free time, he enjoys playing the mouth organ, flute, harmonium and guitar.

Around seven years ago, he formed an organisation named Sur Sangam Society. “We organise a singing competition every year in June. Auditions are held and selected candidates are given a chance to perform live at Yavanika Open Theatre,” he adds. One of his discoveries is Harpreet Deol, who was among the top four contestants in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV.

Also a national-level player of Badminton, Dr Bhardwaj has sweet memories of when he once went to play in Pune. He reminisces: “At that time, some singing contest was being held in Pune and I won it. When we returned to our college with a trophy in hand, we told everyone that we have won, not the match but the singing competition!”A great fan of Kishore Kumar, of the current generation he likes Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan. “For me, singing him is something I do to relieve tension, keep thinking positive and remain cheerful and young at heart,” he adds.
