The civic administration has invited consultants to draw up a detailed map and design for the proposed underground tunnel near the Juhu seaside, so that the traffic can flow easily and provide relief to commuters who wait for hours to cross over from S V Road in Andheri through Milan Subway to the Western Express Highway. The tunnel, proposed to be 20 metres deep, will run from V M Junction to Relief Road extension.
Chief engineer (Roads and Traffic) D S Ghorpade said the civic administration wants to study the feasibility of the project. “This is the only option to widen the S V Road and ease the bottleneck,” he said. The tunnel was earlier part of the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP), to be executed by MMRDA. However, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which owns the Juhu Aerodrome, refused permission, citing security reasons.
Civic officials said permission for the tunnel has still not been granted. However, they hope to convince the AAI with a design in hand. “We have explained to them the need. If the construction is feasible, we can put our point more strongly,” said a senior civic official.
