Junagadh The new train connecting Mumbai and Veraval, which was announced in the Interim Railway Budget recently, has brought joy to the people of Junagadh.

Last month, many people led by a political activist had started a month-long agitation, which was called off after the government had promised to do something concrete.

Junagadh-based activist Shashikant Dave, along with his supporters, had declared that unless a new Mumbai-bound train was started from Veraval, all agitators will jump before a train.

The move was supported by several business organisations, NGOs, and local leaders from Keshod, Veraval, Kodinar and Una. After the Junagadh MP Jashubhai Barad gave his assurance that the demand will be met, the agitation was called off.

"It is a victory of all the people in the region," said Barad. He thanked everyone for reposing faith in his words.

Shashikant Dave echoed Barad's words and called it people's victory. "The train is itself an achievement," he added.

Congress councillor in Junagadh Municipal Corporation, Mukesh Dholakiya, said, "MP Barad's efforts have borne fruit. I hope the train will be soon flagged off from Veraval."

Meanwhile, the local BJP leadership has not issued any statement regarding this.

"The said train will be a connecting one, unlike the one demanded by the agitators," said a BJP leader. Right from the beginning, the BJP had distanced itself from the agitation.

The new train's announcement was welcomed by the people in Keshod, Una and Veraval. Sources said that people gathered at several places and burst crackers.
