The morning chill could not dampen the Punjabi spirit and as the day wore on, the sun finally emerged bright and sunny. The tent-pegging competition was a sight to behold with galloping riders roaring a battle cry while impaling the pegs with lances and disappearing into the far horizon.
The grand finale to the day’s proceedings was a four-lane bullock cart race. Supporters occupied vantage points at the two ends of the open-air stadium and cheered their favourites on. The event saw its share of problems with the bulls breaking free of the cordon even before the race was flagged off.
The sports extravaganza was formally inaugurated by former Minister for Information, Environment and Water Supply Bikram Singh Majethia and Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh was the guest of honour. Other events included track competitions, hockey matches and even a freak circus.
