Rajkot The ongoing slump in the diamond industry claimed another life on Monday. Mansukh Vadodaria (40) from Kesvala village in Gondal taluka of Rajkot district took the extreme step after remaining jobless for four months.

The Gondal taluka police on Tuesday registered a case of suicide. The body was found from the family farm in the village. Preliminary reports suggest that Vadodaria had consumed some poisonous tablets. According to the police, Vadodaria had moved into Surat ten years ago to support his family.

Vadodaria has two brothers and together they own three bigha of land, which is not enough even to support the family of even one. It was for this reason Vadodaria migrated to Surat, where he led a decent life earning over Rs 7,000 per month, said the police.

But he came back to the village with his entire family before Diwali. The family stayed back at the village, as the unit where Vadodaria worked, had not opened its shutters after the Diwali vacation.

Vadodaria has two daughters and a son, they added. Earlier, eight cases of suicides from Amreli district, two from Bhavnagar, two from Junagadh and two from Rajkot have been reported following the closure of diamond units due to the meltdown.
