Kolkata Sobha Mandi alias Sikha alias Uma, a senior squad leader of Jhargram who was in charge of Manikpara-Indraboni area, surrendered to Manoj Verma, Superintendent of Police of West Midnapore on Friday evening. She is the second Maoist leader to surrender after the surrender policy was announced.

According to police sources, Sobha is the younger sister of Sunil Mandi who was arrested in Nandigram with arms. Sunil and Maoist leader Bikash were classmates in Burra Garro school in Sarenga police station area. Sunil is now in Presidency jail.

Sobha and Sunil Mandi were absorbed in Gorabandha squad in Jharkhand after they completed their arms training. In 2007, she was sent to West Midnapore district. Initially, she was put in charge of Jamboni and was later shifted to Jhargarm.

“Sobha has told us that she has a rifle, however we are yet to find that. She surrendered with over Rs 50,000 in cash, which she says belongs to the organisation,” said Manoj Verma, SP, West Midnapore.

A senior police officer said: “Sobha is married to Kamal Maity, a member of the Bengal-Jharkhand-Orissa regional Committee. Kamal is now in charge of Godashila in Jharkhand’s Ghatshila. Sobha was a member of the firing squad which resisted the security forces when they were trying to enter Lalgarh in June 2009 when the operation began. Sobha was allegedly present at the Silda and Sankrail operations.”
