Kaushik Das, a leader of the PTTI Students’ Union, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his house at Hridaypur in North 24-Parganas. Kaushik's family members said he was a student of Jamini Nandy PTTI in the 2005-06 batch. His father Gaur Mohan Das said Kaushik had been suffering from depression since the last year.
Thousands of PTTI students are faced with an uncertain future since the NCTE refused to recognize the degree.
Meanwhile, following the latest incident of suicide, students renewed their pledge to continue the agitation and observed a black day.
“He was present with us during our last meeting with School Education Minister Partha De in February. He was depressed like most of us but we never imagined he would take such a drastic step,” said Pintu Parui, the secretary of PTTI Students' Union.
Kaushik's fellow students blamed the complacency of the Central and the state governments and said they would take a procession from College Square to the state Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
“We are ready to adhere to the NCTE norms that demand a qualification of higher secondary with 50 per cent marks. Most of the students will fulfill the criteria but the government is not doing enough. We are told there is no solution in sight before the next elections are over,” said another student.
