Mumbai Students of various colleges in Navi Mumbai have started a signature campaign in support of Vashi resident Vikram Buddhi, who was arrested in the US in 2006 for posting remarks against former US president George Bush on the Internet.

Students, mostly from various engineering colleges in and around Vashi, kickstarted the signature campaign on Wednesday. They have also prepared a letter to the new US President, Barack Obama. A copy of the same would be forwarded to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

Vikram, who was studying Applied Mathematics in Prude University, was arrested on April 14, 2006, and charged on 11 counts, including charges under US Code 871 that deals with threats to the US president.

Vikram has been in custody for nearly three years now and his father, Dr Buddhikota Subbarao, who has flown to the US to fight for his son, had to face many hardships: authorities denied him extension of visa and his passport was impounded.

Dr Subbarao, who has written to almost all high authorities in the US Judiciary, says his pleas have fallen on deaf ears. He is now planning to write to Principal Deputy Solicitor General Neal Kumar Katyal in the US Department of Justice.

“We are getting good response to our initiative, which will go on for another four days. We will then send it to the US president,” Sparsh Sharma, one of the students who took part in the signature campaign at Vashi Railway station on Thursday, said.
