The dhaba owners near the DMCH have hired a drummer, who starts beating the drum the moment Tehbazari team arrives to clear the area.
In fact, the drummer starts beating even when the team is far away. This gives ample time to shopkeepers to keep their goods inside, thereby saving them from being challaned.
However in Jawahar Nagar market, people go on their motorbikes to spread the word. Even Newsline team saw a pillion rider shouting his throat out ‘committee wale aa gaye’ (MC team has arrived).
This is a common feature in Janakpuri and Jamalpur markets as well. Those who are not able to wind up in time, face the axe of the MC team.
Sources said that at times even the Tehbazari staff too informs some traders before visiting the markets to carry out anti-encroachment drive.
When Tehbazari team went to the DMCH market, the drum started beating but some unlucky few could not wind up their stuff on time. Finally, the team gave them some time to clear the encroachments. In Chander Nagar, however, after a little resistance traders removed their extended sheds.
Later, the Tehbazari team also demolished ramps constructed by the shopkeepers on road. The team also went to the Aarti Chowk to clear the area. However, even today they were not able to do much as shopkeepers resisted the move.
MC Commissioner Vikas Partap said, “Initiative from public is must to see the city clean. You cannot always put the onus on MC for inaction. Still our team is leaving no stone unturned to make the city clean.”
