Anuj hogs limelight in zonal snooker

Lucknow Eighteen-year-old Anuj Mahajan gave a splendid display of precision potting to win three matches on the second day of the Lucknow Zonal Snooker Tournament at the Oudh Gymkhana Club here on Friday.

Playing in the juniors snooker event, Anuj first beat Siddarth in straight frames by 52-34 and 51-37 points and then in his second match, he beat Vivek Tiwari in a three frame keenly contested tie by 61-42, 29-56 and 60-35 points to qualify for the junior state circuit.

Joining him as the second qualifier was Nilesh Nagpal who had to draw out his best to get the better of Nishant Tiwari in three frames by 56-16, 58-72 and 51-20 points.

In the senior snooker event also, Anuj Mahajan showed his class when he beat Nikhil Kewlani in straight frames to move into the next round.

In other matches of the junior section, Nilesh Nagpal beat Ankur Shukla by 57-31, 22-51 and 67-35 points. Nishant Tiwari beat Arvind Mishra by 46-38, 50-66 and 53-34 points. Vivek Tiwari beat Anurag Bhaskar by 55-54 and 63-16 points.

NIEC shines
NIEC defeated UPDC team by 31 runs in the cricket tournament of the 3rd Inter Collegiate Sports Meet being organised by the Babu Banarsi Das Group of Educational Institutions at Dr Akhilesh Das Stadium, here. The highlight of the NIEC innings was an unbeaten 73 run-knock by Abhishek. In badminton, Vivek and Gaurav of NIEC advanced to the semi-finals of the doubles event.
