New Delhi The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to “desist” from felling trees around the Siri Fort complex in South Delhi for constructing basketball and squash courts ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan made the remark to Additional Solicitor General Amarender Sharan, appearing for the Commonwealth Games Committee. Sharan assured the court that he would inform the authorities about the oral direction.

He sought one week’s time to respond to a report of the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on felling of about 1,000 trees by DDA to pave way for the sports arenas. He also prayed that he be given an opportunity to go through the report before any decision is taken on the plea for a stay on cutting of trees and the overall project.

But advocate M L Lahoty, appearing for the local residents, told the court that trees were being felled even this morning despite the fact that the court had on January 23 posted the matter for hearing today.

During the last hearing, senior advocate Harish Salve, who is assisting the court as ‘amicus curiae’, had said that the CEC report was disturbing and that DDA has given a go-by to all norms and laws that require such a project to get environmental clearance.
