Arjun takes CAL XI into T20 cricket semis

Lucknow, January 8 A splendid 80 run-knock by Arjun Kumar went a long way as his team—-CAL XI defeated Unity Cricket Academy by 47 runs in their quarter-final match of the 1st Dr Akhilesh Das Twenty20 Cricket Tournament at Das Stadium here on Tuesday.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, the team of Cricket Association Lucknow scored 136 runs losing nine wickets in the stipulated 20 overs, thanks to a responsible batting performance by opener Arjun Kumar.

Arjun’s 80 resulted off 50 balls which featured 12 boundaries and a lofty six. Arjun was well supported in his efforts by Abhinav Dixit (22). M Javed took three wickets while Shanu Ali claimed two wickets. Amir Zaidi clinched apiece.

In reply, Unity Cricket Academy was bowled out at a total of 89 runs in a matter of 16.5 overs.

Though openers M Raza (23) and Abbas Mehdi (22) laid a strong foundation for the team through their 51-run first wicket partnership. But apart from them and SM Mehdi (12), no other batsman could even reach the double-digit mark due to the commendable bowling by Shahbaz Khan and Vikram Solanki. While Shahbaz claimed three wickets giving away 12 runs in his four over spell, Vikram claimed three wickets conceding 14 runs in the same number of overs. Nooman took two wickets while Abhinav claimed one wicket.

Neeraj excelsfor UP Timber

A devastating four wicket haul by Neeraj Bajpai was the highlight of the match as his team— UP Timber Cricket Club defeated Unique Sporting by 50 runs in their quarter-final match of the Akhilesh Das Twenty20 Cricket Tournament. Neeraj took the four wickets giving away just four runs in his four over spell which featured two maiden overs as well.

Unique Sporting: 70 all out in 18.5 overs ( Pankaj Agarwal 14, Abhishek 10, Vinay Singh 10; Neeraj Bajpai 4 for 4, Jaidev Bisht 2 for 10, Abbas Raza 1 for 10, Suraj Pratap 1 for 12, Akhilesh 1 for 13, SS Sengar 1 for 12).

Sports scribe bereaved

The Lucknow Sports Journalists’ Association (LSJA) has expressed grief over the sudden demise of Sharda Misra (54), mother of Vishal Misra, sports scribe with Swatantra Chetna and joint secretary LSJA. Sharda died due to cardiac arrest on Sunday night at Balrampur hospital here. She is survived by her husband Shankar Misra, four sons and two daughters.
