Armed robbers barged into the house of a chartered accountant on Friday in Hauz Khas in South Delhi and robbed Rs 3 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 30 lakh. They were reportedly armed with screwdrivers and knives.

A case of robbery has been registered with Hauz Khas police station. Several teams are working in the case but no arrests have been made even 24 hours after the incident.

The robbery took place around 2 pm yesterday at the G-25 Hauz Khas, opposite the district DCP office. The house belongs to Sanjay Mitra, a chartered accountant. Mitra was not home as he had gone out for work. His wife Bindu, his son and a servant were at home when the robbers broke in. They were attacked for resisting.

The robbers, all aged between 25 and 30, entered the house and allegedly locked it from inside. They then asked Bindu to give them keys of the almirah’s locker and when she refused, they attacked her and her son. Bindu received minor injury in her head. The domestic help who tried to save them but was also beaten up.

The robbers then stripped the safe of all cash and jewellery and fled threatening the family with dire consequences.

Bindu informed her husband who called the police. The family is making estimates of their loss. Mitra told the police it was around Rs 40 lakh.

Bindu is helping the police make sketches of suspects. Photographs of some local criminals are being shown to her.

A senior South district official said they have identified a few suspects but their names could not be disclosed without verification. “We have clues. The accused were either informed by somebody very close to the family about the cash and jewellery are kept in the house or they had been following Mitra,” said a police official.

Mitra’s wife Bindu is a trading agent. District DCP HGS Dhaliwal was not available for comment.
