With a gruelling schedule chalked out for the 15-day expedition, the team will visit the forts of Sinhagad, Shivneri, Lanandri, Purandar, Torna, Rajgarh, Vajragarh, Rohinda, Sonari, Pandavgarh, Kinjadgarh, Murud, Janjira, Raigarh, Pratapgarh, Vichitragarh, Lohagarh, Tikona, Visapur and Kamalgarh. “Though the team will cycle its way to the forts, it’s not a cycling but an intensive trekking expedition,” cautioned Commanding Officer, 216 Medium Regiment, Col P Venugopal.
“The Maratha warriors are legendary for their defence strategies be it the strategic location of their forts, the tactics followed by the warriors, the positioning of the LOC etc. The purpose of this expedition is to rediscover that saga of the Maratha empire,” added Venugopal.
Besides infusing a spirit of adventure, the expedition will also aim at spreading awareness about the recruitment procedures for officers and jawans in the armed forces and generate awareness of the benefits of the Contributory Health Scheme among Ex-servicemen who have settled in the areas to be visited. The expedition will also serve to strengthen the links between the civilians and the army, with the team slated to interact with the civilian public.
“The Maratha warriors were experts in guerrilla warfare, and have thus been an inspiration for the Army’s counter-insurgency operations in the northeast and border areas. This expedition will give us insight, especially into the basics of armed defence and strategy that have remained the same through the ages,” said General Officer in Command of the 41 Artillery Division who flagged off the expedition expressed pride at the initiative and wished the team success in their endeavour.
