Kolkata Vidyasagar Setu, better known as Second Hooghly Bridge — one of the gateways to Kolkata — was taken over by an Army unit on Friday night for a mock drill against any possible terrorist attack.

Kolkata police chief confirmed the drill was carried at six other places jointly by the Coast Guard, Kolkata Police and the Bengal police. The other places in the city where the drills were carried out were Gariahat market, Forum mall on Elgin Road, Sealdah station, Park Street Metro and Budge Budge oil refinery.

Police sources said Budge Budge oil refinery and the Second Hooghly Bridge are easily accessible through the Ganges flowing into Kolkata port and then to Bay of Bengal. Senior police officers were said to be happy with the response from various units engaged during the trial. Incidentally, Kolkata has repeatedly been alerted by the central and other intelligence agencies for terror attacks.
