“Telangana model is not applicable everywhere. Telengana movement is going on for the past 60 years and it does not mean everywhere a separate state will be created,” Mukherjee said on the sidelines of a function to inaugurate a hospital in North 24-Parganas.
The minister was asked if the Centre would consider the demand of GJM in the wake of its nod for a separate Telengana state.
Meanwhile, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose party Trinamool is a part of the UPA government at the Centre, also made it clear she will not support the demand for a separate state. “We do not want any division of Bengal,” she said at her Kalighat residence on Saturday.
The GJM, meanwhile, announced the 96-hour bandh starting December 14 will not be withdrawn. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had earlier urged the Gorkha leadership to desist from bandhs ahead of the tripartite talks scheduled in Darjeeling on December 21.
Roshan Giri, a GJM spokesman, said the agitations already declared will not be changed but they would be “peaceful”.
Gorkha volunteers continued their fast at different places in the Hills and in the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri while Nari Morcha, the women’s wing of the GJM, geared up to take small delegations to Delhi and Kolkata. Nari Morcha members will hold sit-ins at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and at Esplanade in Kolkata.
There was a spate of cancellations of tourist bookings for Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong.

gorkhaland was never a part of bengal since history and if struggle for telangana is 60 yrs then struggle for gorkhaland is 100yrs old. If small states like meghalay or tripura or say goa can be given then why not gorkhaland and looking back to history gorkhas have much better contribution to the nation then these NE states as these NE states have given only insurgency. Gorkhas r not talking anything wrong they want a peaceful solution and a recognition. now if pranab acts tough then gorkhas are much tougher then u.
friends Pranab & Mamta are bad bangalis. they must be the immigrated from Bangladesh, else there are nobel Bangalis who understand the situation & will help us in this last fight.in any case this time the have to leave the gorkhaland. we are not demanding but we are asking them to leave. if it was part of Bengal then we would have demand but since it was never part of bengal (they have occupied it) so they have to leave now.
Comment by senior political leaders that Gorkhaland cannot be given at the drop of a hat shows the attitude of our leaders towards the opressed Gorkha community. Darjeeling was never part of Bengal and Gorkhas would never accept Bengalis as their masters is a well known fact. If Uttarakhand, Jharkhand,Chattisgarh, and now Telangana can be created , what is the problem in creation of Gorkhaland. After all it is a genuine and age old demand and not just of 60 years vintage?
From the time immemorial the political barganism has been a major principle of the naked imperalist left front govt.of Bengal in dealing with the long stranded gorkhalad demand.Alike the chief minister of West Bengal Mr.Bhuddadev Bhattacharjee the Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh has now stood firm against the creation of seperate state of Gorkhaland without any valid reasons. They say it is impossible to create Gorkhaland without any reasons but we say it is 100%possible to create Gorkhalad and we have ample reasons and for Mamta Banerjee and Pranab babu it is not necessary for you leaders to oppose the division of Bengal because Gorkhalan was never a part of Bengal simaltaneously, for Abhishek Manu Singhvi I would like to suggest to learn more about history, culture, geography of Gorkhaland. To be honest with you sir Darjeeling was never the part of Bengal, our demand is 102 years old ,in fact its more elder then the constitution of the country itself while Telangana is only 60 years old.
Obviously Pranab and Mamata both are Bengalis, why would they agree for Bengal Partition for they too sit over pots of money that comes from GorkhaLand? It is just like a joint family, if there is a difference in family better split and stay as a nuclear, happy family rather than staying joint fighting against each other. The people of GorkhaLand differ in every aspect with Bengalis viz. culture, mentality, creed everything you name it. So why should people of GorkhaLand do all the Hardwork for Bengalis?
