As money pumps in, PGIMER all set for a makeover

Chandigarh With Rs 625 crore sanctioned to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, in the Eleventh Five Year plan, the institute has plans galore to refurbish and modernise the Nehru Hospital building, faculty rooms, operation theatres and various other departments.

Announcing the plans on the occasion of Republic Day celebrations at the institute on Monday, PGI Director Prof K K Talwar also unveiled plans of starting the second phase of the Advanced Eye Centre at the PGI premises. The expansion plans are also being chalked out for the departments of Neurology, Orthopaedics and Renal Transplant.

Officials maintained that funds would also be utilised to carry out the long-awaited renovation of the Research Block A and B, which houses the non-clinical departments.

The institute plans to replace the old infrastructure, including the air-conditioning, sewerage and under-surface pipelines and other engineering works.

The institute is also contemplating to start liver transplants at the hospital, added officials.

With another Mother Centre on its cards, the Departments of Gynaecology and Advanced Paediatric Centre would also be shifted, they added.

Given the increasing load of cancer patients coming to the region, the institute further plans to come up with a separate Cancer Unit.
