Praful Patel, a state government employee in his early fifties, and father of two sons, on Wednesday, together with 40 other odd devotees from the Asaram Bapu ashram fanned themselves in the M S University’s main campus with handbills, determined to have a word with the youngsters.
“Valentine’s Day celebration is a western phenomenon, which has nothing to do with Indian culture. St. Valentine talked of love, but that love can be towards parents too. We are asking youngsters to worship their parents and seek their blessings on St. Valentine’s Day,” said Patel. His two sons are working as engineers, with one of them being now married.
The women volunteers concentrated on the Girl’s commerce college, the Padra Commerce College and also the Parul Institute in addition to the MSU main campus. The volunteers, some parents, and others, most of them in their mid thirties and above, said they were trying to save Indian culture by taking the right message to the youngsters. “This way of celebrating love is a big waste of money. St Valentine did not say that one has to give red flowers and balloons. We are trying to instil the correct spirit of love,” said Manoj, a follower of Asaram.
