Surat The Varachha police have registered a complaint against the president of the Surat Diamond Association (SDA), C P Vanani, after the latter slapped a diamond polisher, who demanded an unemployment allowance.

The diamond polisher, Ghanshyam Katheria, a resident of Santoshinagar Society, Punagam, later approached the Varachha police and lodged a complaint against Vanani.

According to the police, the incident took place after the conclusion of a seminar organised by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Gujarat Industries Centre at Sardar Patel Smruti Bhavan, to give information to diamond polishers about various self employment schemes.

After the seminar ended, Katheria stopped Vanani and SDA vice-president Dinesh Navadia,

who were heading for the SDA office, on Friday evening.

Katheria told the two that SDA should give unemployment allowance to diamond polishers, as the association has been formed for the betterment of the industry. In response, Vanani told him that the unemployment allowances can be given only by the unit owners, not the association.

He further told Katheria that if the unit owner fails to act, a diamond polisher can go to the Labour department and file a complaint. If the department also fails to do the work, he can move the court.

A heated exchange took place between Vanani and Katheria, following which the former slapped and threatened the latter. Later, other members of the association intervened and controlled the situation.

Vanani, however, said: “I have explained him the procedure through which he can get the allowances. I think those who are against me, motivated Ghanshyam to lodge the complaint. A heated exchange took place between us and many people gathered and started pushing each other.”
