Mumbai The police on Monday said that RA Chandran, a radio oeprator, who was arrested for assaulting Anita Rawat (30), the wife of a naval officer, at her residence on Saturday afternoon, has not been interrogated in detail. Though the crime was committed on Saturday afternoon, the police have got the custody of the accused very recently due to various protocols to be observed while handling cases involving crimes committed on areas owned by the defence.

Police Inspector Vilas Bhole (Crime), who is investigating the case, said, “In such cases, we usually have to follow certain protocols set by the defence services. In other cases that involve civilians, the police can visit any place for investigative purposes. But in such cases, we have to take consent of the naval police authorities to enter the premises. While taking Chandran into custody, there were some procedures to be followed. However, the naval authorities were very cooperative. Chandran has confessed to stabbing Anita.”

As per the police, RA Chandran had allegedly been having an illicit relationship with the victim for the past few years. “From what we have gathered so far, Chandran and Anita had met while dropping their children at the school in Navy Nagar and had developed a relationship. On Friday night, Chandran went to Rawat’s residence and started shouting at her and asked her to come out from her house. When the victim’s husband Dharampal Rawat (39) had asked him the reason for doing so, Chandran apparently said Rawat that he he was having a relationship with Anita and wanted her to move in with him,” said Bhole.

Rawat then apparently called Anita and asked her if she wanted to be with Chandran. But Anita refused to do so. “Enraged at her refusal, Chandran gained entry into her house the next day and assaulted her with a knife before injuring himself on his wrist,” said Bhole.

Anita sustained 11 injuries on her torso and thighs. She was rushed to the naval hospital Ashwini at Navy Nagar. “Anita is still in the ICU and is semi conscious. We have not been able to take her statement so far. We have questioned her husband and got many details from him. We will interrogate Chandran on Monday night and Tuesday morning,” he added.
