Kolkata, March 7 The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has begun compiling an edition on selected obituary references made in course of the business of the House during the last 70 years. It plans to complete such compilations by the next Assembly session.

From Mahatma Gandhi to Albert Einstein — the eminent personalities regarding whom obituary references had been made in the opening sessions of the state Assembly — will be published in the collection.

At present, work on compiling 60 to 70 obituaries is in progress. For about six months now, the library committee of the Assembly has been conducting research work in this connection.

“The compilation will help researchers and youngsters to know what was said then in the Assembly during obituary references. The list includes politicians and other eminent personalities,” said Syed Mohammed Masih, member of the library committee and the Legislative Assembly.

No decision has been taken so far on whether the compilations will be in English or bilingual. Details like whether the compilations should have photographs and illustration — are being worked out.

Masih added that a second compilation on important events in recent history and the stand taken by several political representatives within the House is also being considered. These include Partition, floods, India-China wars, teachers’ movement and increase in tram fare, among others. Such incidents and subsequent deliberation on such issues within the House may be available for reading, if things work out according to plan.
