Widow of late Honorary Lieutenant Tarlok Singh, Kaur was brought to the Army Hospital in Dhaula Kuan on January 26 after she slipped on the bathroom floor of her house and sustained a head injury.
“She had internal bleeding and was pronounced brain dead yesterday,” retired Colonel Jaspal Singh, her eldest son, said. “Since she was brain dead, we thought it was best to donate her organs. Though we did not know about the option of the cadaver organ donation, we were happy to help those in need.”
The hospital authorities approached the family members to donate organs, and they agreed.
“Since we started the organ donation programme, people have become aware. The family was already keen on donating,” Group Captain Nandi, Director, Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority (AORTA), said.
According to the hospital, since April 2007, over 3,500 armed forces personnel have pledged their organs. This was the third multiple organ donation at the Army Hospital (R&R) this year, and the 18th since the beginning of the organ donation program in the armed forces.
