At AFMC, top scientists to discuss 216 proposals

Pune, February 1 A Slew of proposals like setting up a central registry for surveillace of heart disease in the armed forces, easier methods to detect malaria, studying the impact of long submarine sailing and others will come up for discussion at the 56th annual Armed Forces Medical Conference to be held at the Armed Forces Medical College from February 5-8.

Speaking with media persons on Friday, Lt Gen S K Kaul, Commandant AFMC, said the annual conclave of armed forces doctors has led to various policy decisions on all aspects of health care delivery.

The conference will be inaugurated by Lt Gen Yogender Singh, Director-General Armed Forces Medical Services on February 5.

The conference considers proposals put up by medical researchers from various parts of the country. Lt Col R Bhalwar, head, Department of Community Medicine, AFMC said that top level scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other organisations will deliberate 216 research proposals and allocate over Rs five crore for the selected projects. Even as the DRDO last year allocated Rs 5 crore on various projects, according to Col Bhalwar, most of these projects are in the final stages of completion. This includes a study to lay down reference anthropometric values related to weight and obesity for the armed forces apart from creating a poisoning registry system. As many as 125 cases of poisoning have been registered with it. Among the new projects this year also includes studying new techniques for management of chronic back pain and leg pain.

The Armed Forces Medical Academic Meeting and the Armed Forces Medical College Committee meeting will also take place during the conference. Guest lectures on bio terrorism -- an overview by Dr D T Maurya and reconstructive surgery -- a boon to rehabilitation will be delivered by Dr Abraham Thomas.

Award winning papers include changes in blood at high altitude, experiences of renal transplantation in over 500 patients and ecological considerations of malaria in the armed forces. AFMC medical cadets will present a symposium on towards immortality while nursing cadets will present one on mental health problems.
