The CM was addressing a rally of bidi workers in the city. “Our government was the result of a continuous movement for rural people and the working classes. We should look into the interests of these people.”
In his ten-minute speech, Bhattacharjee talked about the problems of workers of the bidi industry and price hike, for which he blamed the Centre. He said he had taken up the matter with the Prime Minister but no action has been taken as yet. “Why will the Centre not fix the prices of essential commodities?” the CM asked.
On the plight of bidi workers, Bhattacharjee said in the presence of state Labour Minister Anadi Sahu, “I have asked him to look into the interests of bidi workers in the state.”
The CITU has been skeptical about the CM’s reformist agenda since 2006 when he assumed office for a second term. On strikes, pension bill, labour reforms and other issues, CITU has expressed its differences with the CM on several occasions. But at the fag end of the year, both CM and CITU have made it clear they are on the same boat. Another CPM leader, Shyamal Chakraborty, also spoke on several issues, including law and order.
Maoists ‘execute’ two CPM men in Belpahari
* The Maoists killed two CPM workers in the trouble-torn Belpahari, East Midnapore, on Thursday. Maoist posters were found beside the bodies, claiming that the two were police informers. With these killings, the current toll by Maoists attacks stands at 137. The deceased have been identified as Kunaram Singha (45) and Ananda Singha (42), both residents of Balichua village. Their limbs were tied and the bodies bore bullet injuries. According to police sources, the Maoists first held a kangaroo court and sentenced them to death. Later they were taken in front of the Balichua High School and shot dead. The posters found near the bodies stated that the duo had been given the ultimate punishment for being police informers and for supporting the anti-Maoist Mass Resistance Committee (Gana Pratirodh Committee). “We have recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem. Combing operations are on in nearby forest areas,” said Manoj Verma, SP of West Midnapore.
