Senior consultant for transplant surgery, Dr S P Singh, said the camp has helped in raising the number of organ donors.
He added: “Earlier, one transplant was conducted per year but in the last 4-5 months there have been three transplants. Generally, people are wary of donating their organs as they are not even aware of the basic facts and their judgment is guided by myths. Relatives feel that the body’s appearance may be altered after donation. The panel of doctors has been making a great effort to personally attend to such queries.”
According to doctors, during a person’s lifetime, he/she can donate one of his kidneys and can help only one person. But after his death, the person can donate multiple organs and save the lives of many.
“A drawing competition was also held. A symposium on ‘Promotion of deceased organ donation’ wil be held from on February 7 and 8,” added the doctor.
Chain fast of PGI staff enters second day
The 24-hour chain fast organised by PGI employees, under the banner of All India Health Employees and Workers Confederation (AIHEWC), entered the second day on Tuesday. The members threatened to intensify the agitation by holding a two-hour nationwide bandh on February 17 and 18 in which health employees, members of associations under the Ministry of Health, Defense, Railways, and the Delhi Government, are likely to participate. The AIHEWC added that if their demands are not fulfilled, then members will go on an indefinite strike from February 23. The employees are demanding enhancement of Patient Care Allowance to Rs 3,200 at par with nursing allowance, Grant of Pay Band II to health workers and abolition of contract labour in health system. The employees also held a meeting at Dharna Grounds, Sector 25, on Tuesday.
