A slum-dweller from Anandnagar in Chinchwad, Kantabai apparently wants to renew her ration card. For a fortnight now, she has been making it to the ground floor of the PCMC headquarters in Pimpri where the Citizens’ Facilitation Centre of the district collectorate is located. Her problem is that she doesn't know how to get her work done. She has no clue which paper to submit and which one to procure. Compounding her woes is the fact that no employee at the CFC is in a position to explain to her as to which papers she should get. "We have told her....we cannot keep her telling, we have got so many things to do...we are already heavily burdened," says a CFC employee.
Kantabai says in the past fortnight, she had to spend nearly Rs 1000 on food and travel to PCMC headquarters. "I have been coming here with my daughter and her children around 10 am and leave by 5.30 pm after the CFC is shut. I am an uneducated person, I need help but nobody is ready to help me out," wails Kantabai. After standing in the queue for seven hours, she returns home in the evening, helpless and angry at the system.
When contacted, deputy collector Chintamani Joshi said the collectorate was aware of the staff shortage situation and steps were being taken to open more counters in Pimpri-Chinchwad. "There will soon be more counters for such work in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Things have already been finalised. We are doing our best," he said. Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma had during his budget speech last week declared that there will be four more CFCs at divisional ward offices which will help in reducing the overcrowding at the PCMC headquarters.
