He had been produced before the court at police lines on Sunday after he was brought to Allahabad by a joint team of the Delhi Police and their UP counterparts.
His supporters, however, created a ruckus at the railway station, where he was to arrive by the Prayag Raj Express, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge. Raising anti-Mayawati slogans, they alleged that he had been made a victim of political vendetta.
From the Railway station, Atiq was taken to the police lines and he faced the judiciary there instead of the local court.
“We decided not to take him to the local court after the incident at the railway station,” said Superintendent of Police Uday Shanker Jaiswal.
The judicial custody for Ahmed will begin from Monday. He is to be moved to Naini Jail on Sunday night. But he will stay in a barrack, instead of the special building where he stayed in 2005 after surrendering in connection with murder of BSP legislator Raju Pal. At the time, the Samajwadi Party was in power and he had received VVIP treatment for 56 days before getting bail.
But this time, “the MP will be kept like other prisoners,” said a senior jail official. “We have already taken action against the then jail officials who ensured VVIP status to him,” he added.
