Sources said the EC has ordered for the video-trailing of Ahmad following complaints that he was trying to influence voters by threatening them. Sources said that the EC had received complaints that Ahmad was threatening some rival candidates. Ahmad was released on bail from Basti jail on Tuesday and had started campaigning on Wednesday. The 73 cases he faces include the murder and an attempt to murder. The police had invoked the Gangster Act, the Goonda Act and the NSA against him.
The UP Chief Electoral Officer, Umesh Sinha, confirmed that EC has ordered the video-trailing of Ahmad following complaints that he was trying to influence voters. Sources said that a video-surveillance team would cover every poll related activity of Ahmad for the entire day. The team would start following him as he will come out of his house for campaigning. Sources said that EC had taken the decision after a poll observer from Allahabad had complained with EC against Ahmad during video-conferencing on Thursday.
So far, the video-surveillance teams are covering only the public meetings and rallies of candidates and star campaigners to monitor their speeches and the expenditure made on the arrangements.
