Chandigarh The police today arrested the driver of an auto-rickshaw, who had abandoned one person in the fields, on the pretext of taking him to the hospital on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, after which he died.

The accused, who has been identified as Sukhvinder Singh, is a resident of Alamgarh village near Rajpura. He had hit one motorcycle-borne man Sushil (25), at a deserted place in Mohali. The police said they arrested the accused from his village after getting a tip-off about his movements. He later confessed his crime and said he had become very scared after the accident and thus abandoned the body of Sushil in the fields, instead of taking him to the hospital.

"I was afraid of the police. Now, I realise that it was a big mistake. Had I rushed him to the hospital, he would have survived," he told the police. Sushil, a resident of Manimajra was found dead near the railway station at Kambala village in Mohali.

Eyewitnesses said an auto rickshaw had hit Sushil's motorcycle, after which he fell down and sustained injuries. The driver of the auto rickshaw picked him from the spot on the pretext of taking him to hospital but he abandoned Sushil's body in the fields and fled.
