“There will be no change in the number of passengers,” said Secretary (Transport) Ram Niwas.

While autorickshaw owners have agreed to a majority of the guidelines pertaining to the Motor Vehicle Act, they are not ready to reduce the number of passengers from eight to five.

“Since we are cooperating with the Administration, we expect some kind of relief on the limit of passengers,” said chairman of the Autorickshaw Union, Harcharan Singh Sahni.

The traffic officials, meanwhile, have indicated that the process of issuing challans for overloaded autorickshaws may soon be initiated.

“In the coming days, we will issue challans to the autorickshaw owners for loading more than five passengers. A special drive for the same will be carried out in the city,” said Superintendent of Police (Traffic) H S Doon.

To this, Niwas added, “The third time an auto is issued a challan, it will be impounded.”
