Avantha group to invest Rs 100 crore in education sector

Patiala, October 07 The Avantha group, earlier known as the Thapar group, plans to invest Rs 100 crore in the next three years for expansion in the technology education sector in Punjab and Chandigarh.

Thapar University’s director Abhijit Mukherjee said that the Thapar Technology Campus, comprising Thapar Polytechnic, Thapar Centre for Industrial Research and Development and the Thapar University, plans to expand its existing campuses in Punjab and Chandigarh and start some new courses.

Mukherjee said apart from taking the present student strength from 2,000 to 6,000 in the next three years, the Avantha group plans to set up a medical education centre in Dera Bassi, near Chandigarh. The group has 14 acres of land in Dera Bassi, where it plans to start health care management courses jointly with the PGI in Chandigarh.

Besides, it plans to start a new campus in Chandigarh’s prestigious Education City project. The group is setting up its new campus in six acres of land, where new courses are set to start soon.

New courses in MBA (Energy), Social Sciences and MPhil in Economics and Psychology have also been proposed to start soon. Mukherjee announced the expansion plan at Thapar University’s 22nd convocation, which was addressed by A Sivathanu Pillai, distnguished scientist and chief controller, Research and Development, DRDO and MD, Brahmos Aerospace.
