Ahmedabad A sub-inspector with city police, S P Kharadi, has been suspended for allegedly delaying investigations into a high profile bank fraud case last year. The move is perceived as a stern warning for lax policemen in Gujarat Police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI), A V Vasava, who issued Kharadi’s suspension order on Monday, said: “Since Kharadi did not file the chargesheet on time, the three main accused in a Rs 1.5 crore State Bank Of India (SBI) fraud were granted bail by a lower court. I wanted this to come as a stern warning for all policemen with the city police.”

According to the police, several accused, including some senior SBI officials and some city builders allegedly siphoned off Rs 1.5 crore from the Maninagar branch of the SBI.

Based on a complaint filed by SBI authorities, a metropolitan court had ordered a probe in the case (1/08). Kharadi was heading the probe, sources added.

Vasava refused to divulge details about the accused involved in the scam, on grounds that police investigations are underway.
