Ahmedabad Having shown ‘ownership’of ayurvedic gardens to meet the deadline set by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), the nine Ayurveda colleges in the state are now awaiting inspections, scheduled between January 19 and 25.

The college authorities, however, fear being caught for the faux pas. An official from the Akhandanand Government Ayurved College in Ahmedabad said: “Our college had shown a leased plot and developed it into a garden. We are also aware that the area of the plot does not fulfil the requirement of an ayurvedic garden. We have to keep our fingers crossed for the inspection.”

Incidentally, the Akhandanand Government Ayurved College had shown about 2,000 square metres plot inside the Victoria Municipal Garden as the herbal garden. The required area of the garden should not be less than an acre.

Similarly, the Sheth J P Government Ayurved College, Bhavnagar has shown a part of the Moti Bagh Public Garden as their herbal garden, while the Government Ayurveda College, Junagadh, has Ayurvedic Vikas Mandal pharmacy garden in its fold.

Working president of the Gujarat State Non-government Ayurveda Colleges Management Association, Nihil Mehta said, “From what some of these colleges have shown as an ayurvedic garden, it is quite easy to find out that it’s a plain cover-up job.”

He added: “The colleges are simply not in a condition to fulfil the required criteria. While some run in rented apartments, it is not possible for many of the colleges to sustain a garden, leave alone a one-acre ayurvedic garden. Any person can understand the misappropriation.”
