Kolkata As the furore over Mamata Banerjee's comments in Lalgarh about the death of Maoist leader Azad is dying down, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee came out with an unequivocal support for her. The matter, he said, has been cleared up before the prime minister and Mamata has every right to speak her mind.

With the Opposition demanding a clarification on her comments in Parliament, the Trinamool chief — before flying to Delhi for the Monsoon session — had said she stood by her comments.

“We are fully aware of her position in respect to Azad’s killing,” Mukherjee said on Sunday at the Kolkata Press Club on the sidelines of a programme. “Mamata Banerjee, myself and Union home minister P Chidambaram had a long discussion with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.”

Mamata has only said that if Azad was killed because he was trying to initiate talks with the Centre, then that should be explained, Mukherjee said. “Recently, the Andhra Pradesh government also explained the situation and the circumstances under which his killing took place. Therefore I do not think that what she has stated has any contradiction with the stated policy of the UPA government."

Extending further support to Trinamool chief, he said she was always free to voice her opinions. "Just because she is an ally of the UPA government, it cannot be that she or her political party cannot have an opinion."

Azad was killed in an encounter with Andhra Pradesh Police on July 2 and on August 9, at a rally in Lalgarh, Mamata has said he was "murdered".

Rebuffing CPM claims of Trinamool having "links" with Maoists, Mukherjee also said if Mamata thinks the Maoist problem can be negotiated through dialogue and invites Maoists for talks, it does not prove a Maoist link.

Regarding Trinamool allegations of CPM cadres entering Lalgarh under cover of joint security forces, he said: "She has alleged that under the coverage of joint operation, the armed cadres of Marxist Communist Party are taking advantage and those who were driven out from the area are trying to reorganise themselves and come back. She brought the matter before the Union Home Minister, who would look into it."

About the recent spurt in political violence in the state, he said political clashes should be avoided and there is no room for violence in a democracy.

Later in the day, accompanied by state Congress chairperson Manas Bhuniya and AICC leader in-charge of state K Keshav Rao, Mukherjee inaugurated a new Congress office at 14 Congress Exhibition Road. The office will be resource centre for the visit of Rahul Gandhi in the first week of September and the Sonia Gandhi's visit on September 25 for the party's Eastern Zonal Conference involving five states.

P.Banerjee by Azad's death on 30 Aug 2010

Pranab Mukherjee called 'Chanakya' of Indian politics has beliitled his position in the estimation of public by extending support to Mamata's double talk in the issue of Azad's death. However,it's not unexpected of Mr.Mukherjee to stoop so low to save UPA as TMC is an ally with the higest numerical strengh next to his party. However, his remark has put both Mr.Chidambaram and the Prime minister himself on the spot.Unfortunte!

Pranab supports Mamta. by Madhusudan on 30 Aug 2010

Whatever comment given by FM in support of Mamta is very unfortunate.Mamta is trying to capture power in WB with the help of naxalites as done by JMM in Jharkhand. There is growing trend among political parties to appease naxalites to win elections.Congress is most opportunist party who is always siding with destructive forces for political mileage. The hanging of Afzal Guru is deliberately delayed by govt which encourages terrorism in country. All terrorists are well aware that this govt has no courage to take any action. So they are going stronger day by day.Kashmir is glaring example where separatists are allowed to work against Indian govt who are openly demanding merger with Pakistan. Why govt is not hanging such anti-nationals?The weak policy of govt has led to total collapse of law & order in country while ministers & leaders are openly criticizing govt action against naxalites & terrorists which is very shameful & distressing.

Diplomacy by pradip kr. das on 30 Aug 2010

That is Mr. Pranab Mukherjee ,The great Diplomat in the Government ,tackle everything so casually both in UPA or in his own party. He is already named as Crisis manager of the Indian National Congress. It is simple that he should stand by the 2nd.largest supporting party of his government.

The Same Old Story by Radhe Shyam on 30 Aug 2010

Sekhar Gupta in an article has apty forecasted the doom of Congress in the shadow of this seemingly left intellectuals or sudden leftist leanings of certain congress leaders as an opportunity.... Mao is dead but long live Congress Maoism. That is what happens when a party has no ideology and its only job is stark electoral opportunism to keep clinging to power.
