New York, January 14: Is the United States ready for its first black President? African American voters are skeptical.

It is still a long way to the White House for Democrat Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, but only 47 per cent of blacks said the country was prepared to elect a black person as President, according to the latest nationwide New York Times/CBS News Poll.

However, 56 per cent of whites said they felt that way.

Also, a majority of whites and blacks, and men and women, considered the country ready for its first woman president.

The poll's findings are based on a national telephone survey conducted Jan. 9-12 with 1,061 registered voters; it has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

US survey--- by romesh.sharma on 14 Jan 2008

Such surveys are mere estimates which vary drastically when the time of actual happening comes. As said in this report that 47% of Blacks say the countriy was ready but blacks are still a minority which can hope but can't change the deep dug feelings of Whites. Most whites do say for the sake of showing their good-will and sense of equality, which is artificial, but true heartedly they won't welcome this very idea of having a black President.I don't think if there had been any Black Vice-Prez in the USA even.To elect one Vice-Prez will be the right step forward to show the world what US expects and preaches the world. In this case of Barak Obama it sounds like an intrigue through which the democrats are trying to catch more votes from other minority communities. Moreover for Obama its simply impossible to be elected as Prez not because of his skin colour but his genealogy which relates him to Islam which is solid reason of implacable antipathy.People like Kerry are supporting him is a mere show which is important part of American life.

Afro-Americans not ready for black presidency by Col(ret)R.Aggarwala,Univ Faculty, USA(ret) on 14 Jan 2008

Yes it is largely true that americans in general are not yet ready for a black presidency. Even a woman presidency would not have been acceptable but for the Hillary and Bill Clinton factor, in that both have been in the white house for 8 years already, with the best years for America during Bill Clinton's presidency. Once Hillary chooses Obama as Vice President(though unlikely) and gains the presidency, it would advance the cause of a future black president like Obama, who is NOT totally black but of mixed decent. It will also clears the way for a future woman president on her own strength.

afro presidante? by mark on 14 Jan 2008

The " White" america orfor that matter the white nations across the globe are not ready for any one but a white to lead their nations. they have absorbed the non whites for marketing purposes to gain a moral high ground to look and sound nice so as to go around and preach to others about their multi-culturalism and tolerism while being racist in the shadow. thats the hypocricy of the western world.

you are wrong by vishal on 16 Jan 2008

Mark, if that is your right name, you sir, are a cynical SOB. Whites everywhere are much more tolerant, fairminded and generous than any non white nation.
