Howrah, January 27: Stressing on modernising the syllabus in madarsas, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said his government was not for checking the importance of Al Amin Mission in the state.

"The government is for a balance between the educational standards of the majority and the minority groups. In madarsas modern education should be imparted side by side with the knowledge of Arabic and the Koran," he said in his keynote address at the convocation at the Al Amin Mission residential school at Khalatpur in West Bengal's Howrah district.

He said that more and more students passing out from the Mission should enter public life and help in the country's development.

Stress should be put on technical and vocational training to help the students as well as the country take rapid strides to compete with developed nations.

The Mission's General Secretary S Nazrl Islam said the institute would work for promoting education among the Muslims of the state.

West Bengal Madarsa and Minority Development Minister Abdus Sattar, MPs Mohd Salim, Hannan Mollah, Al Amin Mission Chairman Mostaq Hussain and former MLA Nanigopal Chowdhury spoke at the function.

Modern education is one option by Som Karamchetty, PHD on 28 Jan 2008

For any religion, there are actually two options. 1) Separate religious and modern technical education so that a small number of graduates of religious studies serves the religious needs of the society while a large number of graduates of the technical schools gains economically. 2) Increase the number of religious institutions and their graduate output so that they may propagate the religion vigorously, convert a large number of citizens to their chosen religion, collect funds for the religious institutions, and repeat the process to perfection.

The Myth by parijat on 28 Jan 2008

All we hear from Muslims is about how the majority Hindu community has "ganged up" to keep them backward.Unfortunately this is just another excuse taken by their inefficient religious/political leaders.Muslims should realize that the Majority community(read hindus) are better off "Despite" the leaders.Self help is the only option.Until Muslims realize that the path to prosperity is "Not fundamentalism but being Moderate" they will continue to be backward.

Modern education for Muslims by RJ Khurana on 27 Jan 2008

Budha is right in asking the Muslims to strike a balance between technical and religious education. There is no salvation for Muslims in India unless they take to modern system of education and march with the times. Being religious is no bar to their following aprofessions that require modern skills. By confining their childen to masjid-based Madarssas, the Muslims are keeping their children miles away from banishing their poverty.Sadanand Dhume in the latest issue of the influential Ameican journal Commentary expressed the view with which I agree, “Until India is able to view itself and its history dispassionately, rejects the twin failures of socialism and non-alignments, modernize its Muslim citizens and bring their aspirations in line with those of the Hindu majority, it will likely remain an under achiever.”
