India batted poorly through a rain-interruption to be all out for 194 from their curtailed 45 overs and then their bowlers raised hopes as Australia lost three wickets on way to 51 from 7.2 overs before rain washed out the remainder of the match.
Ishant Sharma and S Sreesanth were breathing fire, managing lift and movement, which made Australia's target of 141 runs from 26 overs off a revised Duckworth Lewis system not as straightforward as it looked at one time.
Australia were 33 for one from four overs when the first interruption occurred and the resumption lasted only 3.2 overs before the final heavy downpour came.
Earlier India made a disappointing 194 from their 45 overs.
Both the teams got two points each from the abandoned tie.
India meet Sri Lanka in their next outing on Tuesday.
Earlier, India chose to bat first on winning the toss and only a late flourish in the final eight overs that yielded 66 runs brought them this far.
Paceman Brett Lee with five for 27 was the main destroyer for the Australians.
India were 128 for six from 36 overs when rain stopped their innings for close to an hour before it relented and the match was reduced to 45 overs a side.

A balanced approach is what is needed at this point. Yes fielding does play an important role but so does experience. No one can deny that. Do you really think a team filled with young kids can stand up to a team like Australia ? We see all of them fall like a bunch of cards. Thats when experience comes in. We could have reduced the number of seniors in order to groom new players but to eliminate them completely was ludicrous and it is showing. Hopefully selectors will get the sense that they can not rely on the words of a captain who himself doesn't have much experience except for a fluke T20 win. Take away the T20 win and he is zippo. Enough said.
How many ODI Dhoni and Yuvraj need to settledown as batsman and score runs. They are in Australia for a long time, still couldnot adjust with pitch and bowling and score handsome runs. Such out of form players are made captain who after each match only blame batsmen or bowler but donot say anything about their own performance. Sack such useless captain and vice captain and give captaincy to Viru.
ICC record shows that more Asian cricketers get out by LBW, run out and now hit wicket. What is the secret?
The secret is that star players on the subcontinent are virtualy never given out LBW because of the fear of retribution from your insane fans, (burning effergies come to mind) So, when they get into a situation with nuetral umpires, they are not used to having to worry about LBW and get themselves out more. Anyway, I would like to see the proof of this accusation. By the way, your insinuation of racism is funny, given that India is one of the most racist countries on earth.
Dear Waxer: Just see the record of only Sydney test. Symonds and Hogg abused Indian players. Ponting and Clark took clean catch. But in ICC reord, they have never been punished for unsportsman like behaviors.
Terrible players in India. But it's a secret, don't tell the BCCI.
Harbhajan patted yet another Australian cricketer on the backside on the way off the field. Why does he do this? This is not a "usual" form of affection or greeting.
God has given the selectors one more chance to think rationally. Dhoni and his bunch of lads will only bring bad name to this country. Bring back the mature seasoned players, BCCI?
OUR PLAYERS R SENSITIVE
MONKEY BUSINESS HAS STRAINED ALL OUR PLAYERS MENTALLY.IT IS A WELL PLAYED TRAP BY PONTI
Let them to do more politics than playing
Ranchi has one mental asylum where Dhoni should book a seat. After a complete wash-out in T-20 and Tri-series ODI of his young team, soon he will become mentally dis-balanced to justify his insistence to drop seniors from the team. Or better he should confine himself in his newly built house with T-20 money.
