Nayagarh, Orissa, February 16: A pack of playing cards strewn on the floor, upturned blood-splattered furniture, bullet marks on the walls and scattered footwear at the Recreation Club for policemen were the grim reminders of the audacious attack by naxals on a police barrack in Nayagarh.

Six of the 14 persons killed by the Maoists in the district headquarter town on Friday night were mowed down in the barracks.

"Everybody had his dinner and some of the policemen were playing cards at the recreation club when the naxals rushed in from all sides," a numbed Biswambar Tripathy, cook at the police barrack, said.

The ultras opened fire indiscriminately hardly providing any opportunity for the police to retaliate.

They shot dead four guards posted at the district armoury and two who were at the recreation club. "Many of us ran for our lives as bombs and grenades were also hurled," he recalled his eyes reflecting the fear less than 24 hours after the attack.

The ultras who came in a bus, two trucks and two jeeps emptied the armoury and the police was yet to ascertain the losses.

Many among the crowd, who thronged the police barrack, police station and Police Training School (PTS) in the town, recalled that some of the ultras had entered the town in the evening and had dinner in hotels in the busy bus stand area.

"We thought that they are groups of people passing through the town," said a student.

Naxals by Praveen on 17 Feb 2008

Naxals are the product of the disparity of wealth distribution in India. Budding economy? This economy is helping only 15% of the population. Percentage of poor still remains the same. If not more. India has more poverty than Africa. Wake up you bloody Indians!

Misguided youth need direction from Chin, Bamponth and Prochand by J. Basoo on 17 Feb 2008

These are misguided youth who can only be given proper direction under the great statesmanship of Bamponth under direct command of Chin to bring utopia and seclularism in Hindoosthan.

maoists by H.R.REDDY on 17 Feb 2008

When the ruling elders of our country are interested in saving their chairs how can they find time to think of poor constables and the comon!!!! citizens?.now the leftists may not indulge in curtailing the powers of their brothers. We are destined to suffer and disintegrate into lawless state. Lette them pave the way for their big brothers from north.

Maoists had dinner in Nayagarh before attacking it by vaman on 17 Feb 2008

As long as communists are allowed in this country Maoism will prosper. Their ultimate goal is to destruct Indian democracy, indian culture, hinduism and create a state full of chaos and anarchy. So to eliminate maoism, kick out the commies.

Ministry for Insurgency Control Needed. by Javed on 17 Feb 2008

India has more than a billion people, a budding economy, competitor neighbors, and lack of education and poverty as a key menace. This is perfect for different kinds of insurgencies in different areas for different reasons. What is needed is a FULL MINISTRY POST FOR INSURGENCY CONTROL, so that an entire department is working in coordination with other agencies to guide them, and at least have some one responsible if things continue to go wrong, and insurgency keeps on rising. Such accountability of public servants in this key area will bring enormous progress in understanding and keeping track of insurgent movements, and allow appropriate strategies to be developed despite breakneck change of politicians, whose political career is a fraction of time over which the insurgent movement will run it's time course, or overruns the state. By the same token, I will humbly request our dear elected ones to stop quota politics, as it is divisive for our country, which has to fight many battles for it's survival and progress.

inistry for Insurgency Control by Rajesh on 17 Feb 2008

Javed, great idea. I hope the government makes a note of it - a Ministry of Insurgency control, headed by a tough IPS or IAS official, maybe even someone like Kiren Bedi

'Timeless' philosophy and brittle empires. by surubhi shikand on 17 Feb 2008

Certain destructive movements have deep rooted cause, motivation or philosophy. Eventually, the philosophy may assume a timeless role, generation after generation; but the states and countries might be undergoing breakneck change in regimes or elected ones, which itself becomes a 'good' reason to ignore such uprisings. This is a perfect recipe for continuous spread of such movements, until they reach their height and cause widespread destruction and unrest, before finally fizzling out as nothing would be left to survive with ease. Naxals and Indian state are inter weaved in same kind of situation. Cong is leading the role at one end at this time. Long term outlook, stability, firmness and rationality of approach are the only pillars that can hold against Naxal movement. Now it needs to be seen, who will break eventually; as it will depend upon wisdom which is utterly desired from the Indian state as otherwise something of this kind would not have survived for so long.

to what end? by V R on 17 Feb 2008

Yes, the violence will fizzle out, but it will lay foundation for something which is not necessarily good for the poor. Naxal movements of the 60s laid the foundation for the communist movement in West Begal. See where it has taken WB to. Decline in industrialzation, (although trying to play catch up), not keeping phase with rest of India in agricultural yield. Complacence to illegal immigration and a violent cadre culture that like a under current in the society.

jungle warfare- learn it from Vietnam era. by bakshish chander on 17 Feb 2008

I do not fully understand who and what naxals are, but their existence and acts are a challenge to any lawful nation. More so it is the CAUSE of their existence, which is of utmost concern. Their acts do not seem different from the daku's of chambal. They seem to be organised and masters of jungle topography and escape routes. If Indian army is given a humble chance with air support, they could be smashed with good effect. Otherwise, this movement will do the same to India, as it's cousin is doing to Nepal. Their ideology should be studied with it's full ancestory, and a battle plan made on intelletual and materially effective level. It would need long term solution to the poverty, which becomes utter in jungle and wasteland topography.

SURE SIGNS OF IMPOTENCY by dadaimpotent on 17 Feb 2008

If terrorist attacks in Pakistan are dubbed as it's failure because the establishment supported them at one time, then the Maoist insurgency is a sure sign of impotency of Indian state because at one point this suited (or perhaps still does) the local politicians very well. The question is: IS there a cure for this state of impotency.

Maoists' menace. by Anant Sheth on 17 Feb 2008

Maoists are a mighty big gtoup for decades. Immense damage is done to our country all the time. Govt. of India and the public knows it well. Perhaps due to leftists support, strict vigil

What a joke this Congress Govt. by K. Nath on 17 Feb 2008

While Maoists were unleashing their carnage, I guess Sonia and Left parties would be opening the Champagne bottles to celebrate how India is getting weak and bloody under their rule. Why no action from the Central govt so far ? How can we compare our Military to China if we can't even eliminate these Maoists ? Sometimes I feel Parvez Musharraf is a better leader than this Congress Govt.

Naxals menace need ruthless handling by P.P. TALWAR on 16 Feb 2008

Enough is enough. The naxal menace which has already assumed alarming proportions need to be curbed ruthlessly. The recent Nyagarh incident of brutal killings of 14 Orissa Police-men by the daring unlawful Naxals should ring alarm bells for our central government. The way the Naxals had carried out their mission of kiling police men and looting the armoury at will, clearly indicates the foreign hand in support of the Naxals who are creating mayhem in India. When all is fair in love and war, along-with armed IAF helicopter gun ships, artillery shelling should be resorted to, to flush out and smash the rebellious Naxals in their jungle hideouts. All supply routes of Naxals from Myanmar and Bangladesh should be smashed. Considering the gravity of the Naxal menace, ruthless armed encounter with air and artillery support should be launched. When captured, no mercy should be shown to the Naxals.
