Islamabad, February 3: Noted philosopher and political activist Noam Chomsky has said Pakistan is a ‘paradigm example of a failed state’ that has undergone an ‘extremely dangerous form of radical Islamisation’.

The country is now in danger of ‘collapsing’ as it grapples with rebellion, militancy and extremism that is "getting worse" and the assassination last month of former premier Benazir Bhutto might increase unrest in Sindh, Chomsky told the Business Recorder newspaper in an interview.

Asked to draw a parallel between the situation in Pakistan and the characteristics of a failed state highlighted in his book "Failed States", Chomsky said, "I'm afraid to say Pakistan is the paradigm example of a failed state and has been for a long time. It has had military rule, violence and oppression.

"Since the 1980s, it has undergone an extremely dangerous form of radical Islamisation, which has undermined a good part of the society, under the Zia-ul-Haq tyranny."

He further said: "Now it is in danger of collapsing, there is a rebellion in Balochistan, the (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) territories are out of control and always have been -- and it is getting worse. It is possible that the Bhutto assassination might increase the severe unrest in Sindh, where there has been plenty of oppression, and this may lead to another secessionist movement."

Recent surveys had shown that the Pakistani people are ‘in favour of democracy, possibly with an Islamic flavour’ but "those hopes are not even near being realised in the existing political and social system", Chomsky said.

India is next by Suraj on 05 Feb 2008

Islamic India will be the next failed state. It is true that Pakistan is no longer an enimy. The communal Cong and Commis will lead India to this path of destruction. The ethnic cleansing in NE is noticeable and will spread to West Bengal in no time. UP is next.

Catharsis by K.Mohan on 04 Feb 2008

There are plenty of failed states around Asia and Africa..not just Pakistan and the key is harnessing national resources to unproductive uses..islamic propaganda, scheming civil unrest in neighbouring countries, conniving with criminals and giving them shelter to use their network and them in creating unrest..If you play with fire, cances are good that you will burn in the fire.

Not a time to rejoice by Sanju on 04 Feb 2008

I would be critical of some of the comments here and say it is as much India's fault that Pakistan is where it is today as it is Pakistan's. Our error is probably less of commission than of omission. While at the very banal level, one may say that the "enemy" has lost or is close to it, the real and present danger is the prospect of living with a failed state on our borders. It should have had a significant impact on our government's policies towards that country right from General Zia's time. It is not for us to rejoice or accept as factual what Noam Chomsky says even though it may be true. It is a time to pressure our government into action that will save the region from potential anarchy.

Definition of Failure. Pakistan is close enough. by banarasidas chaubaal on 04 Feb 2008

The definition and perception of failure has changed over the span of 6 decades or so. When the British had left, it was widely proclaimed that both the nations will fail shortly, and they will be back to rule again. But, is it the very fact, (that) to remain as independent, is enough to justify that one nation is a 'success story', needs some revision in 21st century. Failure and success is defined by factors such as ideas, ideals, philosophy, actions, aspirations and willingness to live in the spirit of live and let live. Pakistan has not gone bankrupt on all the fronts to be defined as an utter failure, but it is somewhat close. It is not the rebellion or dissent in it's different quarters but the fundamental other reasons, that argue toward it's ill health. Corruption, illetracy, poverty etc are common evils that plague several impoverished countries and wealthier countries than Pakistan, but these factors still are not considered sure sign of 'failed state'. When, religious fundamentalism, support for terrorism, jihadi movement, failure to live in the spirit of live and let live, start to cloud the visible ideals and actions of a country despite vivid resentment by rest of world, and in disregard to it's genuine needs; do the perception of a 'failed state' takes birth. Only with a new philosphy, corrective measures against jihadis who show no mercy to innocent lives, will the Pakistan ever be able to raise it's head with dignity amongst the comity of nations. It will take time and a lot of 'internal' and 'inner' turmoil, if this is to be true one day.
