Forest officials said the full-grown tigress had strayed into Deulbari village in Kultali in West Bengal's South 24-Parganas district on Sunday evening.
The tigress was at the receiving end of mob fury ever since she was spotted by the villagers who gave her a hot chase and pelted stones at her, the officials said.
Five forest guards were injured by the irate villagers who tried to prevent them from taking the animal away. Three villagers were injured by the tigress. Of them, the condition of one, Ashu Dhali, admitted to the primary health centre, was serious, sources said.
Hounded by the frightened villagers, the big cat, which had to swim across two rivers - Matla and Makri - to reach the village, climbed up a banyan tree for shelter, sources said.
Forest guards arrived at the spot and encircled the tree with a net to trap the animal but the locals set the tree on fire.
On seeing the flames, the scared animal jumped from the tree-top on to the net, tore it apart and escaped to an abandoned village hut, the sources said.
But there was no respite for the tigress as the locals set the hut on fire forcing the animal to flee to a social forestry area.

For a minute just shutup with your sanctimonious preaching and imagine, that you are a poor disenfranchised villager. You work in the fields. You children play in the grass and suddenly you have a pregnant tigress amongst you. Pregnant means unable to hunt and therefore looking for softer targets. For example your livestock or your kids. The moron who said , better 10 villagers than a pregnant tigress, needs to put his own stupid self in the villager's shoes and say it again. Would he be similarly willing to save the tigress if his own kid was outside in imminent danger of being eaten by a hungry beast ? Hey i am all for preserving our natural heritage. Our wildlife but when people lose sight of the fact that human beings come first before any bloody animal or plant it really annoys the heck out of me. For the defenseless villagers in a remote area, the tigress is death incarnate. They did what they had to.
I think we are very near to the time when India will not be having any more tiger
Please do educate the villagers and the tribals about what they should do when they see a cat....the gracious animal and our national symbols strength is dwindling and they are hurting an animal which is pregnant. We cant educate the poachers, but atleast we can educate teh villagers.the forest dept and the tiger conservation board has to take up some kind workshops and educate the people who reside close to the forest areas.
Just wondering who the animal is.
one can easily find out that many of the indians are still cromagnan( adivasi)for their cruel behaviour
Why police didn't shoot the useless villagers ? What happened to the tigress ? There is always half news in Indian media.
These villagers are stupid or ignorant or both. They are in the tiger's habitat and not vice versa. I hope the forest officials were able to save the poor tigress. Better 10 villagers than one pregnant tigress!!! The tiger is a national symbol and should be guarded with one's life. When the last tiger in the wild is killed India would have lost a major part of its soul.
PLease protect endangered species. They are part of our beautiful Nature and World. Imagine, we destroy all trees and vegetation, which sustain life. Why not we can live in the desert or icy mountains? All animals are part of our ecosystem, they are our sisters/brothers. We are animals too, we are fortunate animals. We have intelligence to see what is right and what is wrong. Its fault with our education system, which lacks education for the protection of Nature and environment (including animal life). Be wise and don't destroy the beautiful planet of biodiversity. We will destroy in turn.
