New Delhi, January 26: History was made on Saturday when President Pratibha Patil took salute at the main Republic Day parade, becoming the first woman Head of the State in the country to do so.

On the 59th Republic Day, soldiers from the armed forces saluted their first woman Supreme Commander as they marched down the majestic Rajpath in style.

The 73-year-old First Citizen came to the saluting dais in her elegant black Limousine along with her French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy, the chief guest of this year's Republic Day celebrations.

Patil was elected as President in July last year.

Her husband Devisingh Shekhawat, who was mistakenly identified by the commentator as Devisingh 'Patil', was beside her when she took salute.

Patil was seen intermittently talking to Sarkozy, apparently explaining to him some aspects of the parade.

She also presented the 'Ashok Chakra' awards to four soldiers posthumously.

Non controversial President by Raju on 27 Jan 2008

The country would have preffered less controversial and non political woman in Presidential palace. Mrs. Patil's only qulification is a gender otherwise she is the least qualified person due to her family involvement in some controversies. We after long time Prsident in APJ Kalam, who was member of minority and did contributed in national defence. No president of India with such contributionn has occupied the palace!

Writing History---- by romesh.sharma on 27 Jan 2008

Sitting in a Cafetaria with some local friends,I am living in Europe,we were talking about Republic day and military show when I was suddenly asked by one that why Indian politicians look half-dead/starved?I wanted to answer him tactfully and before I could finish he said"just see their faces and eyes reflecting inferiority complex and that as if they are beseechingly hope some favours".There were more such comments regarding corruption, riggings,a foreigner(Italian Sonia)heading the Govt and indecent behaviour of Indians with tourists etc and it was my first experience in 35 years to leave the acompany with silly excuse and go for fresh-air.Though I could tackle but didn't like to justify otherwise because in a way he/they were very much correct.Walking alone suddenly my eyes were wetand I found myself lost some where in the past, the past that I didn't go through, feelings of deja-vu.Thiniking of great patriots and true sons and daughters of this holy-land are being degraded/insulted by adding undeserving and selfishly power hungry people to the History of the country. How can Sonia Gandhi replace Sarojini Naidu and how Pratibha Patil could be first-citizen who sees ghoasts in the dreams! Why she didn't take her husband's name ,Shekhawat? Is this also amied at political edge/gains/ambitions like this name Gandhi? Most politician,so to say leaders of India have contaminated the piosity of the nation's history with subversive idealogy and such actions.May God save India from such people .

wait for more histories by baby on 27 Jan 2008

we can expect so many 'histories', as long as politicians mould such rubber stamps to implement thier hidden agenda. Is is a real shame that such a woman with no quality at all (and never even heard about her before)is placed in the chair formerly occuppied by distinguished personalities!

What qualities to become the first person??? by Anand Babu on 27 Jan 2008

What sort of history? Yeah, as an incapable and un-charismatic!!! A rubber stamp in the mould of Zail Singh during the 80's. OK some one wanted a female, don't we have a better female in India? May be an item girl from Mumbai tinsel town would be better. This is a job with no minimum qualifications required right????

Indian President by U N Han on 27 Jan 2008

Impartial observation and expression with good intention are a MUST for the President. Can we expect such behaviour from a person elected by a dynastic party?

Fix the spelling mistakes on the discussion board!! by Hemant on 27 Jan 2008

For the editor... the three options for the dicussion board should be "reply" - correct, "forward" not "forword", and "report abuse" - correct!

Next it will be Rahul... God save India! by Hemant on 27 Jan 2008

Manmohan Singh - PuppetPratibha Patil - PuppetIndians - Sad bunch (we must have done something wrong to deserve the above two)

Indians made a mokery of themselves !!! by Vishakha on 27 Jan 2008

Indians did a mokery of themselves by electing bunch of jokers in power in 2004. Since than we have seen a joker PM and now a joker president, I wonder these people even have shame to step down for holding the top offices just to sleep. I wonder if India has done any progress on any front in last 3 1/2 years. All these jokers are sleeping. I want BJP back... Those were the days when Indian news papers were full of new initiatives from the government. Look at these people all they have talked in last 3 1/2 years is reservations for muslims...

No disrespect intended by Hemant on 27 Jan 2008

Vishakha... no disrespect intended, but it is mockery and not mokery.

We will have many more "histories" awating for us- Courtsey Congress party by B. B. Goel on 27 Jan 2008

One day Dawood Ibrahim will be Indian president. Even Italina Mr Q (of Bofors fame) can also make such "history". Thanks Congress for giving our nation that great distinction.

Now and then! by Dr.G.G.Rajan on 27 Jan 2008

Among the puppet Presidents, she has the credit of being the first lady puppet President.Among the past Presidents of India, Dr.Kalam was an exception who had the grit and could even raise many questions seeking clarifications. He was not a rubber stamp and could not be taken for granted by theruling party goons.

The President and Indian polity--- by romesh.sharma on 26 Jan 2008

The next time History will be made by appointing an Italian woman as PM with highest national awards and decorations to follow with her son RahulGandhi/Khan.Moreover history was made on 22 may 2004 when Manmohan Singh was appointed as PM,who never wonand contested a muncipality election and then on 25 July when Pratibha Patil was appointed as President. This can happen only in India and Indian history which is otherwise too shamelessly manipulated/flawed and there is hardly something left of which one can be proud of.Such magniloquency irritates more to every healthy rational mind.Don't have anything against Mrs. Patil but its the corrupt Indian polity which causes dismay.

President by Ram on 26 Jan 2008

Left to the public Pratiba Patil would have become the President of India by herself but her becoming President with the help of politicians has affected the sanctity of the post. The respect she deserves is not forthcoming from the public.

Indian President by Murali on 26 Jan 2008

Existing style of electing our Prime Minister and President is out-dated in any democratic set-up previling anywhere in the world. Let us adopt the way they elect their President in the US and UK

Ref: Indian President by Murali by Paramjit Bahia on 27 Jan 2008

Come on Murali Ji get your facts right. UK does not have a President

Our President VS their president by Dr. R K Chanma on 26 Jan 2008

Is our President Pratibha Patil counterpart of French President Nicholas Sarkozy? And for that matter a counterpart to American President Bush. We need a debate. Because in my understanding Bush and Sarkozy is elected by people of their country, whereas our President is selected by Sonia Gandhi, just like Manmohan Singh.
