New Delhi, March 14: The Supreme Court suspended on Friday legal proceedings against Richard Gere, who faced obscenity charges for publicly kissing Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty in 2007.

Gere made headlines when he arched over and kissed Shilpa Shetty, winner of the British reality television show Celebrity Big Brother, several times on the cheek at an anti-AIDS show in New Delhi.

Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran stayed the arrest warrants against Gere and granted permission for him to travel to and from India.

The court criticised the complainant for his 'moral policing' and observed, 'such complaints are publicity hunting. You are bringing a bad name to this country'.

Similar legal proceedings against Shetty were suspended last year.

A devout Buddhist, Gere is involved with charities dealing with AIDS and orphans in India and often visits the country.

The SC is only looking to the biggest bribe. by Sanjay on 16 Mar 2008

Next time you see people pronicating in public, that will be one less place you will able to go. These mafia don's criminal awari log(common trash) don't miss a single moment to insult someones culture and live like common animals.

Double Standards. Scrap the law by Naresh on 15 Mar 2008

Its absolute double standards. Young couples are not allowed to be cozy in Mumbai as per the law but such an outrageous act on stage was let go scot free. A law is a law and it should not matter if it is a foreigner or any high profile person. I am in for scraping the related law because next time I feel like kissing my wife in public I should not be thinking of going to jail or getting harrassed by police who are only implementing the law

obscenity charges by Srinivas on 15 Mar 2008

Obscenity charges dropped by SC with strongest strictures against the complainant may be right as per the intellectual assessment depending upon facts and prevailing circumstances. However, as I had seen in the video footage in TVs the way in which implanting kisses in a forced body language for a sufficiently continued duration obviously intensive erotic exposure. Mere kissing is different. It is common amongst the tinsel world. Had the SC seen the video footage or not is not known or the entire judgement version also not known I cannot make-out under which circumstances Mr.Gere left scotfee without even a warning in tune with the modesty culture maintained in our Nation. Westernisation and western mind set is different it takes a further course of years permeating as common as of now being encouraged. OK amongst themselves kissing in whatever way may be accepted but not in the Public function, I feel. What message is going to impress upon the common is anybodys guess. Thanks..

Gere by J.M.Manchanda on 15 Mar 2008

Such frivolous litigation should not start in the first place. It is a waste of court's time and causes delay. It should not have needed the intervention of Supreme Court to throw out the case. Having done so, exemplary costs should be imposed on the litigant to act as a deterrant.

good call by Borun Chowdhury on 15 Mar 2008

The complainant ought to be punished for wasting the court's time.

SC is right by P.Zipk on 15 Mar 2008

The SC of India did the right thing. They should now do one more right thing and reprimand the Judge who issues warrants. A kiss in the public would destroy our culture? What a nonsense..I agree with someone one this forum asking why it is not ok to kiss in moviews but it is ok in public? However the censorship is the domian of the administration not the Supreme Court of India. The government should set it right.

Richard Gere by Raju on 14 Mar 2008

The SC acted rightly, but they should have fined the ediot for least for the legal expenses encured by Richard Gere or his people. Or make the ediot to pay some funds to charity Mr. Gere work for. If one see the kiss on the TV it was just and elederly affectons for Ms. Shetty!

Court decision by Chandra Goyal on 14 Mar 2008

The issue involved in the case was not whether the plaintif sought cheap publicity or not; rather the judgement should have been based on whether what Richard Gere did was right or wrong as per the Indian Laws. So it(the judgement) is not given in the right perspective. It is simply meant to bail out Richard Gere, as otherwise that would have given India a bad name in the opinion of the hon'ble judge. How can anything that is not allowed in our films be acceptable in the open. Anyway, they are the best judge.

what's immoral in saudi arabia is not immoral in India. Please move to Middle east. In India we have a liberal society - thank you.

Thank you SC by Drea Girl on 14 Mar 2008

This self styled moral police is wasting the precious time of SC. An insignificant case as the Gere Kiss should not have gone to the SC at all. Gere is doing such a wonderful job for the underpriviledged and AIDS patients in India.

Gere Kiss by Eddy on 14 Mar 2008

This matter should not have gone up to the SC. It is obvious that Richard Gere, a friend of India, was innocent. Incidents such as these give India a dubious name.

gere by seenu on 14 Mar 2008

Kudos! For resolving the issue in just a year!!!Case has to be disposed by SC is interesting!Lower courts dont seem to be having much work these days...nothing gets resolved there anyway!

well done SC by vishal on 14 Mar 2008

kudos to the SC for nipping in bud this ridiculous tendency of some in India to be self styled the moral guardians of indians. The SC should have gone a step ahead and fined this moron for bringing a frivilous law suit and more importantly for trying to imping upon the consitutional rights of a free citizen of india.
