New Delhi, January 1: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been admitted to a Delhi hospital following "mild breathing difficulty" and a chest infection.

The 61-year-old UPA chairperson was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital late last night and was diagnosed with having chest infection, a hospital statement said. Her condition is stable now.

Gandhi was having "cough and mild breathing difficulty" when she was admitted, the statement said, adding that treatment has started and "her condition is better now".

However, there was no word on when she is likely to be discharged from the hospital.

"There is nothing to worry," sources at her 10 Janpath residence said. Her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka, who were away on a vacation, are expected back either on Tuesday or on Wednesday, they said.

Gandhi was suffering from mild fever and cold for the past few days, party sources said, adding that she, however, had presided over several party meetings despite being unwell.

During the last few days, she had participated in the meeting of senior leaders to introspect over the Gujarat poll debacle and had also presided over a meeting of the Congress Working Committee called to condole the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

She had also taken part in the foundation day celebration of the Congress on December 20.

The sources said unlike in the past, she did not go on a year-end vacation this time, as she was unwell.

We are in pain due to poor health of Sonia Ji by Johnny DeSouza on 01 Jan 2008

It appears that Sonia Ji's pain, suffering and shortness of breath is due to 'Maut ka Saudagar'. All Muslims and Christians should unite and make Rahul Gandhi Ji PM of India with absolute majority, this will bring back good health and cheer of Sonia Ji.

Sonia Gandhi in hospital by Hemant on 01 Jan 2008

Umm... I don't like Sonia. So I don't care what happens to her. Why is this news anyway? She worked when she was sick.... many Indians don't want to... but have to since they are the only breadwinners in their family. Get over it. I am pretty sure Ambika Soni will be in the hospital pretty soon, suffering from anxiety... her sweet Sonia was in hospital, how can she stay behind?!! Sonia "ji" say "Jai Shri Ram" and you will be ok... next....

Wishing madam speedy and early recovery. Definitely the pollution is on the rise and situation is alarming even in Lutyens. This speaks of the magnitude of the problem.

Control Pollution by Delhi my second home!!! on 01 Jan 2008

With surging traffic and polluting industries, Delhi has been worse hit by air pollution. Even healthy individuals when exposed to polluted enviroment can potentially have phneumatic problems such as asthma. Yogic excercises and breathing practises (even advised by UK govt. in mid 60's) can help recover from asthma. Wishing a fast recovery to Sonia. Hope Sonia can educate her environment ministry to set high standard in environment control in Delhi and other important parts of the country.
