Ludhiana The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation drew an extremely poor response on Wednesday as it opened tenders for 87 development projects worth Rs 250 crore.

Contractors had applied for only 54 projects while the remaining 27 forms were rejected for not following the norms.

The MC will again invite the tenders in a few days.

The development works include laying bricks and road metalling among others, which were approved during numerous Sangat Darshan programmes of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the city.

Poor response has not only stalled some of these projects but forced the MC to call tenders repeatedly. Sources said that in the past, contractors had not even applied for a single project.

The chief minister had cleared a number of projects during the Sangat Darshans keeping in the mind the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, sources added. The global slowdown has, however, forced the contractors to not hire too many projects, resulting in the poor response. Senior Deputy Mayor Parveen Bansal said: “It seems that contractors have enough work in hand. So we will call the rest of the tenders later.” A lot of work has already been allotted, he claimed.
