Ludhiana Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor Simarjit Singh Bains was on Friday sent in judicial remand for 14 days in connection with the assault on Ludhiana (Central) tehsildar Gurjinder Singh Benipal on June 19.

Bains will be lodged in the Central Jail.

The Akali councillor was produced in the court of Duty Magistrate Jagdeep Sood by the Sadar police after his nine-day police remand ended on Friday.

On June 19, tehsildar Benipal was assaulted at his office by a group of 30-odd men, allegedly led by Bains and another Akali councillor Kanwaljit Singh Karwal.

Bains surrendered at the Sadar police station on June 23 and was produced in the court of Duty Magistrate the following day.

Karwal, too, is lodged in the Central Jail at present.
