Kolkata Sweets and football have for long fuelled joy in the City of Joy. And as the football World Cup frenzy intensifies, Kolkata's sweetmeat shops are doling out just the right recipe for its soccer loyalists: sweets designed on Brazilian and Argentinian flag designs. The decade-old Ma Gandheshwari Sweets in Howrah is a case in point.

"Our hot favourites are the Brazil and Argentina roshogollas priced at Rs 5 a piece. Children are also nagging their parents to buy them football sandesh and the Brazil and Argentina flag sandesh priced affordably between Rs 5 and Rs 10 a piece," said Keshto Halder, proprietor of Ma Gandheshwari Sweets.

And price is the last thing on the mind of the football loving city. "The world cup sandesh and the bid sandesh carrying the World Cup mascot is priced between Rs 25 and Rs 30 a piece. We sell nearly 200 pieces of each daily," Halder said.

On Halder's list now are life-size 'kheer' sweets depicting Argentina's Messi and Brazil's Kaka. "150 kg of kheer will be required and it will cost nearly Rs 40, 000," said Halder, who has played football at the district level.

There is a complete World Cup ambience in Ma Gandheshwari Sweets with World Cup festoons adorning the walls and Brazil and Argentina jersey-clad men standing stationed at the sales counter.

Even the pot containers for sweets like roshogollas and pantuas are coloured yellow, green, white or blue — the colours of the Brazil and Argentina flags.
